Basketball Card Market Trends 2026: What's Moving

Basketball card market trends for 2026: the Topps license era, record Logoman and rookie sales, Wemby and Flagg, investor groups, and what to watch next.

The high-end basketball card market has changed more in the past 18 months than in the previous five years. The NBA license moved from Panini to Topps. The sports card auction record was broken twice. A rookie card sold for $8.04 million within a year of the player's debut. This report covers the major basketball card market trends of 2026, based on documented sales and announcements through mid-October 2026.

Trend 1: Eight-Figure Basketball Cards Are Here

Scatter chart of high-end basketball card sales from February 2025 to September 2026, including the $12.93M Jordan/Kobe Dual Logoman, $10M Jordan/LeBron, $8.04M Flagg, $6.50M Kobe/LeBron and $5.11M Wembanyama Prizm Black, with a marker at Topps' Oct 1, 2025 license start Figure: High-end basketball card sales, 2025–2026. Dates are approximate to the reported week, and private-sale dates are announcement dates.

  • August 24, 2025: the Jordan/Kobe Exquisite Dual Logoman sold for $12.932 million at Heritage, the all-time public auction record for a sports card (ESPN).
  • Fall 2025: the Jordan/LeBron Exquisite Dual Logoman reportedly sold privately for $10 million (Sports Collectors Digest).
  • September 2026: the Kobe/LeBron Dual Logoman brought $6,501,840 at Alt (Sports Illustrated).

Before 2025, no basketball card had publicly topped about $5.2 million. The ceiling for top-tier cards has more than doubled.

Trend 2: The Topps License Era Begins

On October 1, 2025, Fanatics' Topps became the exclusive NBA and NBPA trading card licensee, its first partnership with the NBA since the 2009-10 season (NBA.com). Key details:

  • Panini's final licensed NBA product was 2025 Prizm Black. Later Panini basketball products cannot use official NBA team names or logos (Giant Sports Cards).
  • Topps' first licensed release was China-exclusive NBA Match Attax, and 2025-26 Topps Basketball launched in the U.S. on October 23, 2025 (Sports Business Journal; NBA.com).
  • Topps introduced a 1/1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph and Gold Logoman patches worn by 2024-25 award winners, plus Topps Now cards for real-time moments.

What it means: Panini-era rookies (Luka, Wembanyama and others) now have a closed supply of licensed Panini cards, and Topps products are the new chase for current players.

Trend 3: The Rookie Debut Patch Becomes a Grail Overnight

On September 25, 2026, Cooper Flagg's 2025-26 Topps Chrome Update Rookie Debut Patch Auto 1/1 sold for $8.04 million at Fanatics Collect after 83 bids. It is the highest price ever paid for a rookie-year card and the third-highest basketball card sale on record. Read more in our Rookie Debut Patch guide.

Trend 4: Wembanyama's Market Matures

  • February 2025: his Prizm Silver PSA 10 was near $800, down about 60% year over year (The Athletic). In the same month, his Prizm Nebula 1/1 set a record at $860,100.
  • March 2025: his National Treasures Logoman, unsigned, sold for $528,000.
  • May 2026: his Prizm Black 1/1 PSA 10 sold privately for $5.11 million, the highest price for any non-autographed NBA card (LA Times).
  • July–October 2026: the Prizm Silver PSA 10 averaged about $3,027 across 194 sales, with a PSA 10 population of 5,284 (Card Ladder).

See our Wembanyama guide.

Trend 5: Concentrated, Investor-Style Buying

Kevin O'Leary, collector Matt Allen and Paul Warshaw bought the Jordan/Kobe card ($12.932 million), the Jordan/LeBron card ($10 million) and Luka's Flawless Logoman ($4.7 million). Sports Collectors Digest reported that the group spent more than $27.6 million in under 60 days. O'Leary told ESPN he views the cards "no different than our bitcoin holdings, our ethereum holdings, our gold holdings."

What it means: a small group of buyers can reset prices at the top. It also concentrates risk, because if those buyers step back, the top of the market has fewer bidders.

Trend 6: Million-Dollar Cards Are Becoming More Common

In January 2026, a LeBron 2003 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor PSA 10 sold for $1.11 million, the first million-dollar card of 2026. Yahoo Sports noted that LeBron is now on 25 cards that have crossed $1 million. The same card had sold for $645,000 in October 2024, so its price nearly doubled in 15 months.

Trend 7: Consolidation of the Infrastructure

  • Grading: PSA graded 15.34 million cards in 2024, compared with 1.87 million for SGC and 657,000 for Beckett (Sports Illustrated). PSA's parent acquired SGC in 2024.
  • Marketplaces: eBay acquired Goldin (announced April 2024). Fanatics turned PWCC into Fanatics Collect (July 2024) and also owns the license holder, Topps.
  • Auction scale: Heritage reported record 2024 sales of $1.867 billion, with more than $200 million in sports.

See our auction house comparison.

Trend 8: This Cycle Looks Different From 2021

The 2020–2021 boom was broad. Pandemic-era demand, The Last Dance documentary and grading backlogs lifted almost everything. The 1986 Fleer Jordan PSA 10 went from about $40,000 at the end of 2019 to $738,000 in January 2021, and then fell by more than half within months (Yahoo Sports). The 2025–2026 cycle looks more selective:

  • Records are concentrated in unique cards. Dual Logomans, 1/1 parallels and debut patches have led the gains.
  • Buyers are fewer and richer. Investor groups and established collectors, not a wave of new entrants, set the top prices.
  • Liquid cards still swing. The Wembanyama Prizm Silver PSA 10 nearly quadrupled from its February 2025 level, which shows that mass-market cards remain driven by news.

Risks to the Bull Case

  • A thin bidder pool at the top. If a few major buyers pause, record prices may not repeat.
  • License-transition uncertainty. Topps' ultra-premium basketball products are still building their record of results.
  • Population growth. Ongoing grading adds supply to high-grade modern cards.
  • Macroeconomic conditions. Collectibles are discretionary purchases and can soften when money is tight.

What to Watch for the Rest of 2026 and Into 2027

  1. Topps product reception: how ultra-premium Topps basketball products compare with Panini's National Treasures and Flawless.
  2. Debut patch supply: each rookie class adds new 1/1 Debut Patch Autographs, so pay attention to which players' cards hold value.
  3. Panini-era scarcity: whether the closed supply of licensed Panini rookies supports long-term prices.
  4. Investor concentration: whether a small number of large buyers keeps setting records.
  5. Liquid-card volatility: Prizm Silver-type cards will keep reacting quickly to player news.
