Upper Deck Exquisite Basketball: Why It Still Rules
Upper Deck Exquisite Collection basketball explained: the $500 pack, LeBron RPAs, dual Logomans, and why Exquisite holds the biggest card records.
When Upper Deck released 2003-04 Exquisite Collection Basketball in June 2004, the price shocked collectors: $500 for a five-card pack. More than two decades later, Exquisite cards hold the top two spots among the most expensive basketball cards ever sold, including the $12.932 million Jordan/Kobe Dual Logoman. This guide explains what Exquisite is, why it changed the hobby, and which cards drive its market.
What Is the Exquisite Collection?
Exquisite was Upper Deck's ultra-premium basketball brand. According to Upper Deck and Cardboard Connection, the first release:
- came out in June 2004 as a 2003-04 product,
- cost $500 per pack, with five cards per pack,
- was built around the deep 2003-04 rookie class, led by LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade,
- numbered its base cards to 225 and its rookie patch autographs (RPAs) to 99.
The idea was simple and new at the time: few cards, very low print runs, on-card autographs and premium jersey patches. Every high-end basketball product since then, including National Treasures and Flawless, follows the template Exquisite set.
Exquisite's Key Moments

2003-04: the RPA and the first dual Logomans
The first Exquisite set created LeBron's defining rookie card, the RPA /99, along with its /23 parallel. Sotheby's notes that it also included a three-card dual Logoman checklist: LeBron/Jordan, LeBron/Kobe and Kobe/Jordan.
2004-05: autographed multi-Logomans
Exquisite then added autographed dual Logomans and triple Logomans, including trios such as Yao Ming, Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan, and Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird (Sotheby's).
2005-06 onward: an expanding Logoman checklist
According to The Exquisite Project, 2005-06 Exquisite included 39 dual Logoman autograph cards and 10 triple Logoman 1/1s. The 2006-07 and 2007-08 releases produced the dual Logoman autographs that now set records.

The Jordan/Kobe card is recognized by Guinness World Records as the most expensive basketball trading card sold at auction. It drew 82 bids and more than doubled its pre-sale estimate. Sports Illustrated reported that the Kobe/LeBron dual had sat in a private collection for nearly two decades before it was submitted to PSA. Cards like that, unseen for years, still surface from Exquisite's print runs.
Why Exquisite Still Outsells Its Successors
1. It came first
Heritage's Chris Ivy summed it up to ESPN: "Exquisite was first, Exquisite paved the way." Being first gives Exquisite a historical premium that later products cannot copy.
2. Its rookie class and its checklist
The 2003-04 class gave Exquisite LeBron, and Upper Deck's long relationship with Michael Jordan gave it Jordan autographs and patches. Kobe was also an Upper Deck athlete in that era, which made the Jordan/Kobe, Jordan/LeBron and Kobe/LeBron combinations possible.
3. Signed directly with the athletes
ESPN reported Ivy's point that Upper Deck worked directly with the athletes and guaranteed the items, and that PSA authentication adds a further layer. Clear provenance matters a great deal at eight figures.
4. A fixed, closed supply
Upper Deck has not made NBA-licensed Exquisite cards in many years. The NBA license went to Panini and then, from October 1, 2025, to Topps (NBA.com). The classic Exquisite checklists are closed, and no new copies of these cards will ever be made.
Collecting Exquisite Today
Know which year you are buying
Each year has a different checklist and different serial numbering. Confirm the year, the card code (for example #DL-KM for the Jordan/Kobe dual) and the numbering.
Expect thick-card grading challenges
Exquisite cards are thick and memorabilia-heavy, and many were graded by BGS with subgrades. The record Jordan/Kobe card is a PSA 6. Condition grades on these cards tend to be lower than on modern chromium cards.
Weigh provenance heavily
For 1/1s, check prior auction appearances, grading history and how the card was described when it was graded.
Compare across products carefully

Risks of Collecting Exquisite
Exquisite's prestige does not remove the risks.
- Illiquidity. The best Exquisite cards trade a few times a decade, often privately. Selling one quickly at a fair price may be impossible.
- Concentrated demand. The Jordan/LeBron and Jordan/Kobe duals were bought by the same investor group. A small number of buyers sets the very top of the market.
- Condition sensitivity. Thick stock and patch windows make high grades rare. A small grade difference can mean a large price gap on RPAs.
- Reported vs realized prices. Several Exquisite records are private sales. They are credible press reports, but they are not public auction results, so treat them as reference points rather than firm comps.
- Alteration risk. Patch cards are a target for tampering. Buy authenticated, encapsulated examples with a clear history, and see our fake graded card guide.
Exquisite and the Logoman Legacy
Exquisite did not invent the Logoman. Sotheby's credits 2002-03 Upper Deck NBA Logo Mania with that. But Exquisite made the multi-player, autographed Logoman the hobby's ultimate card. Six of the nine highest basketball card sales on record involve Logoman patches, and the top two are Exquisite. Read more in What Is a Logoman Card? and the most expensive basketball cards.
FAQ
How much was a pack of 2003-04 Exquisite?
$500 for a five-card pack at release in June 2004.
What is the most valuable Exquisite card?
The 2007-08 Exquisite Dual Logoman Autographs Jordan/Kobe 1/1, which sold for $12.932 million at Heritage in August 2025.
How many 2003-04 Exquisite LeBron RPAs are there?
The base RPA is numbered to 99, and the parallel is numbered to 23.
Why did Exquisite stop?
Upper Deck lost access to the NBA trading card license, which was held exclusively by Panini for more than a decade and passed to Topps on October 1, 2025. Without the license, Upper Deck cannot make NBA-licensed Exquisite cards with team logos.
Are Exquisite cards a good investment?
The top cards have set records, but they are illiquid, often trade privately, and depend on a small pool of very wealthy buyers. Treat them as collectibles first.
What is the difference between Exquisite and Ultimate Collection?
Both are Upper Deck premium basketball brands from the same era. In 2003-04, Ultimate Collection carried single-player Logoman autographs of rookies such as LeBron, Carmelo and Wade and of legends such as Jordan, Magic, Bird and Kobe. Exquisite debuted that season with its $500 packs, RPAs and dual Logomans (Sotheby's).
